Many thanks for your comments Ash ,and I must say, what a blessing that you have never had to have a filling! My advice with regard to filling materials is to have EAV testing http://besthealth.com.au/eav-explained/or blood testing to determine which dental materials are biocompatible with your body. I am actually in the process of having an asymptomatic root canal treated tooth removed and determining through blood work done through BioComp Labs (US) http://www.shslab.com/ the best materials to replace it with.

Believe it or not, I think in many ways; from quality of the restoration and effect on the surrounding tissues/ overall health, that gold really is a great filling material, however, it doesn’t look great to most of us!

Hi Elysee,

I think a vast majority of us are confused about fluoride and the best advice I can give you is to educate yourself and make decisions that are right for you and your family.

There is a lot of controversy surrounding this subject and I believe that in the coming months that it will escalate and become more mainstream in the media!

Not swallowing fluoride toothpaste is a huge concern as it is potentially lethal! Since all treatment recommendations need to be client-centered, you need to ascertain if the benefits outweigh the risks with the help of your daughter’s health care providers.

Does your daughter currently have tooth decay issues? Have you researched Xylitol or any of the re-mineralization products/protocols?

I am going to send a link to an article taken from the website of Dr. Jay Gordon a pediatrician who has some good information on fluoride and nutrition.

Wow! I hadn't thought about the difference, I guess I just lumped both of those ideas together. I am now beginning to recognize some things I thought I had cured, that I really am in the healing process. I have also seen many times someone wanting someone else to cure them, when that doesnt actually work. Thanks so much for clarifying and opening my eyes to that difference :)

Hello Kathleen, You have a beautiful practice and such a refreshing take on dental hygiene. Being so environmentally concious must attract a very health-concious and resposible clientelle.

I am also an RDH and I am trying to decide if opening my own independent practice in my home is the right decision for me and my family. If you have time, would you mind giving me some guidance as to how you started, costs, and maybe just some insight on what to expect.

I really appreciate your time and understand if your schedule doesn't allow you to answer me in great detail.

Thank You

Nicole.

I'm also confused. I'm speaking here as a mom of a 4 year old who has Autism. She still doesn't know how to spit when we're brushing her teeth. And since they say fluoride is not supposed to be swallowed, we're still using a non-flouride toothpaste for her. Her dentist however says that she already needs fluoride. Please enlighten me. I'm afraid to have a bigger problem if her teeth will cause more problems. To fluoride or not to fluoride? What's lesser evil?

That's a great post. Many patients don't realize that Dental Hygienists are highly educated professionals in a self-governing body. Often, patients think the Dentist is the star of the show, but in reality, it is the hygenists that bring issues to the Dentist's attention.

I am fortunate in that I have never had a filling, however I am wondering what the best filling material is these days? I'm talking basic materials (not gold).
Why they ever decided Mercury is beyond me!
