The good news is; many dentists no longer place mercury fillings relying instead on a number of “white-filling” alternatives because they are a better choice aesthetically and functionally nowadays. What is of concern however is how mercury fillings that people still have in their mouth react to their surrounding environment and if they need to be replaced the protocol for their removal.

I was diagnosed with Cancer in December of 2008 and while it’s usually not a life-threatening form of the disease, Squamous Cell Carcinoma was enough of a wake-up call for me.
I began to take a good, long, look, at all areas of my life and what I needed to change as I endeavored to get my health back on track. First on my list was to leave the practice I was currently working in. This was not an easy decision as I had been there for many years and it was comfortable and safe. However, I had changed personally and spiritually a great deal over the previous few years and sadly I knew that it was time for me to leave.

What makes me different?
Firstly, there is no dentist! So…. there are not the typical sights, sounds and smells of a traditional dental office. Many people still don’t know that they now have a choice as to who can provide their preventive oral health care services.
Secondly, wherever possible, I have used environmentally-friendly, sustainable materials and practices. The office itself has reclaimed wooden floors and some of my furniture has been made from old, hand-hewn barn beams. I have used paints that have no VOC’s and the office is bathed in natural light allowing a reduction in the use of artificial lighting. All disinfection products are environmentally friendly and biodegradable and disposables are kept to a minimum by my extra efforts to use re-cycle able materials that I personally sterilize in my autoclave.

I then began to do some reading about noise pollution and found that this is a phenomenon that is garnering more attention and research lately, especially in more highly industrialized and populated areas. As a result, this was one of the major reasons that I chose to open my own practice. I try to keep the sounds gentle and welcoming and I have found that I am more relaxed and so are my clients.

However……. a growing body of evidence indicates that fluoride is neither safe or effective and thousands of health, medical, dental and environmental professionals are calling for an end to fluoridation worldwide.
Make no mistake, Fluoride is a drug and it is the only drug in the world that is added to the municipal water supply to actually treat humans.

The decision to pioneer this new concept in preventive oral health care comes mainly from some challenges to my own health and the need to have control over what I subject my body, mind and spirit to. This, coupled with legislative changes in September 2007 allowing Dental Hygienists to practice without a dentist led me to believe that this was what was needed for not only my health, but for my patients and the planet as well.
