I did not know that there are methods for testing mercury toxicity and protocols for removing it from our bodies in order to restore our health and well-being.

I have personally met and read about a number of dental professionals who subscribe to these truths and unfortunately, for most of them, it was because their health had been severely compromised that they began their search for the truth in the process of healing.

Two days of hearings in Gaithersburg, Md. ended last week with a recommendation from the advisory panel that the FDA examine all relevant scientific studies and evidence presented. pertaining to Mercury fillings.

The FDA did issue a reclassification of “dental amalgam” as a class ll device last year but according to groups such as “Moms Against Mercury”, this rule did not go far enough to protect consumers and they petitioned heavily for this meeting. While the FDA acknowledged that dental amalgam “releases low levels of mercury vapors”, the rule went on to state that “clinical studies had not established a causal link between dental amalgam and adverse health effects in adults and children”.

Many people may decide to have their mercury amalgams removed for preventive reasons but there are a good many who may be experiencing chronic health issues that appear to be related to heavy metal toxicity.

It has been two weeks since my last blog post at which time I wrote about the possibility of elemental mercury exposure being an underlying component to a myriad of chronic health problems. If you were to ask most dental professionals what they think about this possibility, they would likely disagree and defer to the American Dental Association’s stand on this issue; mercury/amalgam fillings are safe.

Last week I left you with the question: Why did dentists who vehemently opposed mercury/amalgam fillings switch to their use? From my viewpoint, it is pretty obvious that there were financial reasons. Losing money and patients to barber-dentists was the impetus to turn a blind-eye to the serious and known health hazards related to mercury fillings.

More and more dentists left the society in order to be able to place the highly-profitable amalgam fillings and as a result the ASDS disbanded. Then, in 1859, in what to me is a tragic and ironic twist to this story the American Dental Association (ADA) was formed to support these amalgam-placing dentists without fear of losing their licenses.

The good news is; many dentists no longer place mercury fillings relying instead on a number of “white-filling” alternatives because they are a better choice aesthetically and functionally nowadays. What is of concern however is how mercury fillings that people still have in their mouth react to their surrounding environment and if they need to be replaced the protocol for their removal.
