The FDA did issue a reclassification of “dental amalgam” as a class ll device last year but according to groups such as “Moms Against Mercury”, this rule did not go far enough to protect consumers and they petitioned heavily for this meeting. While the FDA acknowledged that dental amalgam “releases low levels of mercury vapors”, the rule went on to state that “clinical studies had not established a causal link between dental amalgam and adverse health effects in adults and children”.

The Root Canal Cover-Up

Now, what I find particularly interesting is that in the interim, (1915), the National Dental Association (now the American Dental Association) appointed Dr. Price as their first Research Director. What is especially important to take note of here is this: this very important information was covered up for over 70 years by a group that did not believe in his theories.

Root canal/endodontic therapy involves the removal of the pulp (nerve, blood and lymphatic tissue) from within the roots of a tooth, supposedly sterilized, and then typically filled with a rubbery material called gutta-percha which then supposedly seals off this now supposedly sterilized canal. While the process sounds logical and the procedure routine in order to save a tooth, the anatomy and physical properties of that tooth suggest that root canal/endodontic therapy may not be the safest choice for our systemic health.

Michael Douglas’ recent diagnosis and treatment for throat cancer has brought oral cancer into the spotlight.

While other cancers like breast and skin have received a great deal of attention, this may be changing. In the past, throat cancer made up to 18% of head and neck cancers but these days that number has climbed to 33%.

It has been two weeks since my last blog post at which time I wrote about the possibility of elemental mercury exposure being an underlying component to a myriad of chronic health problems. If you were to ask most dental professionals what they think about this possibility, they would likely disagree and defer to the American Dental Association’s stand on this issue; mercury/amalgam fillings are safe.
