Two days of hearings in Gaithersburg, Md. ended last week with a recommendation from the advisory panel that the FDA examine all relevant scientific studies and evidence presented. pertaining to Mercury fillings.

Many people may decide to have their mercury amalgams removed for preventive reasons but there are a good many who may be experiencing chronic health issues that appear to be related to heavy metal toxicity.

It has been two weeks since my last blog post at which time I wrote about the possibility of elemental mercury exposure being an underlying component to a myriad of chronic health problems. If you were to ask most dental professionals what they think about this possibility, they would likely disagree and defer to the American Dental Association’s stand on this issue; mercury/amalgam fillings are safe.

More and more dentists left the society in order to be able to place the highly-profitable amalgam fillings and as a result the ASDS disbanded. Then, in 1859, in what to me is a tragic and ironic twist to this story the American Dental Association (ADA) was formed to support these amalgam-placing dentists without fear of losing their licenses.

The good news is; many dentists no longer place mercury fillings relying instead on a number of “white-filling” alternatives because they are a better choice aesthetically and functionally nowadays. What is of concern however is how mercury fillings that people still have in their mouth react to their surrounding environment and if they need to be replaced the protocol for their removal.
